EADS MTA is currently responsible for the design, testing, certification and industrialisation of the Advanced Refuelling Boom System (ARBS).

This entirely new boom uses the latest technology to provide faster and safer receptacle refuelling. The system incorporates fly-by-wire controls operated from a console in the cockpit to give improved controllability.

The almost 18 metre-long boom has a much longer reach and a larger refuelling envelope than that of the KC-135. The nominal fuel flow is 1,200 US gal./min at 50 Psi with a maximum flow of 1,500 US gal/min. The design is based on a fail-safe/fail operational concept and includes a load allevation system and an independent disconnection capability.

A boom operator console is located in the cockpit, from where refuelling operations are carried out using sidestick controllers and an advanced 2D/3D vision system. The console can also be used for mission planning and training operations.

A testing rig has been constructed at Getafe, near Madrid, to carry out functional testing and continuous development using a real boom. A second boom is dedicated to the ground qualification test processes, while a third boom is installed on an Airbus A310 platform, which is used for flight-testing and qualification of the ARBS. It will also be used as a system demonstrator.

The first production booms are reserved for the Royal Australian Air Force, who will receive the first of five A330 MRTTs (Multi Role Transport Tankers) combining wing pods and the ARBS in 2009.

EADS CASA is currently in charge of design, testing, production and certification of the ARBS. A testing rig has been constructed, which will be used before and during the qualification flight tests, to carry out the entire functional tests and integration phase with a real boom.
